SACRED INSTRUMENTAL
All of the arrangements for brass ensembles of various sizes on this page were written for performance
by church brass groups that I now play in or have played in. The Hymn Tunes for Horn series was
likewise written for myself and friends to play in services. The string and woodwind ensembles
were transcribed from original brass ensembles of the same name.
They are all useful as preludes, offertories, special music, or postludes
for church services as well as concert and recital repertoire.
Most of these arrangements are titled with the name of the hymn tune rather than that of a familiar hymn which uses it. Hymn tunes usually have sometimes odd names that are not well-known except by church musicians, which are
fine for recitals, but if performed in a church service, the name of a season-appropriate hymn that uses the
tune should be substituted, as most people would recognize that more than the hymn tune name.
I have included the most familiar hymn titles sung to each tune.
Alternate voicings, where available, are accessed from the same link on J.W. Pepper.
Separate buttons access the alternate voicings on Sheet Music Plus.
All of the compositions and arrangements on this page include a link to a YouTube
video where you can preview the entire score while listening to a recording.

Brass Quintet PREVIEW ON YOUTUBE
This seasonal arrangement begins with He is Born, moves to Sing We Now of Christmas, and then reprises the first carol. All three sections are played without pause or tempo changes. Originally written for a church brass group that I played with in Portland.
"Everyone gets a chance to play the melody in this expertly arranged quintet. Through canon and polyphonic techniques, the composer has made a unique and fun arrangement for grade 4 brass quintet." (publisher's promo)

This composition for brass quintet or septet (quintet plus 2nd horn and trombone) is based on a medieval Christmas hymn which dates from the late 14th Century and probably had its origins in Germany. Personent Hodie was first published in the Finnish song book Piae Cantiones in 1582. The Latin text has had many English translations over the centuries, but the one most commonly heard today is On This Day Earth Shall Ring by Jane M. Joseph (1894–1929). It was first introduced as a hymn tune in The English Hymnal of 1906 set to the words of Horatius Bonar’s I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say. What Wondrous Love is This | Brass Quintet or Sextet PREVIEW ON YOUTUBE: QUINTET SEXTET
Adapted from my organ composition of the same name, this piece is available in both standard brass quintet and brass sextet (standard brass quintet plus a second trombone) voicings. WONDROUS LOVE is a Southern folk hymn that was first published in the hymn book The Southern Harmony in 1835. It has since appeared in about 60 hymnals, virtually all of which use the same 1811 anonymous text "What wondrous love is this." The origins of this haunting Dorian mode
melody are somewhat obsure, but it probably originated in early 17th century England, having been sung to a variety of texts until becoming popular in 1701 as The Ballad of Captain Kidd.

The Gift of Love | Brass Octet PREVIEW ON YOUTUBE
This octet for 4 Bb trumpets, F horn, 2 trombones, and tuba is based on a traditional English tune, the origins of which are uncertain, but is today best-known as the source tune for the popular hymn The Gift of Love, with words based on I Cor. 13.
Several other lesser-known hymns also use this tune, including An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare and When Love is Found. It is sometimes heard as an alternative tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.
Few will recognize the somewhat odd title of this tune, and since song titles are not subject to copyright, it should be identified as "The Gift of Love," when it is played in church services or on concerts.
